CAMDENTON - David Smith was charged Tuesday with the first degree murder of Shawn Spencer for his shooting death in 2006, according to the Camden County Sherriff's Office. Spencer was 27 at the time and has been listed as a missing person for years.

The sheriff's office provided a timeline of what detectives say happened:

In April 2006, deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Silver Mountain Drive in Camdenton. The deputies spoke with Smith, who owned the residence. After searching the property, police were unable to find any evidence and cleared the scene.

In April 2007, Spencer's mother came to the sheriff's office to report that her son had been missing for approximately one year. Spencer was then listed as a missing person, but the case went cold.

In June 2011, detectives contacted an out-of-state witness who claimed to have seen Smith shoot Spencer to death in April 2006. After an investigation, detectives received a search warrant for the property on Silver Mountain Road in September 2011.

Detectives were unable to locate any remains at the property. Smith denied any involvement in the disappearance of Spencer, so the case again went cold.

Detectives secured a warrant for Smith's arrest after another witness came forward last week.

Smith is charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action. Smith is currently being held without bond in the Camden County Adult Detention Facility.
