Director of Department of Mental Health announces retirement
JEFFERSON CITY - The director of the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) announced plans Wednesday to retire at the end of June.
Dr. Keith Schafer is stepping down from his position after 28 years of service to the mental health field. He served as DMH Director for 16 years, serving two different times from 1986-1994 and from 2007-2015.
"Dr. Schafer's tireless efforts have made a real, lasting and positive difference for thousands of Missouri families," Gov. Jay Nixon said in a news release.
The Missouri Mental Health Commission will start a 60 day search for a new director on Friday.
