Disaster Drill Training Available
Wednesday, volunteers learned how to help in case of emergency.Anyone with medical training was able to take part in a series of training exercises. They created a mock volunteer reception center.
Volunteers learned how to screen and place people where their skills would be most helpful. Because of their medical background, volunteers at this session would be used at a medication dispensing site. This would be necessary in the event of a bio-terrorism attack or widespread disease outbreak.
"We do need volunteers, you know, no community is just readily prepared with a number of staff that can go ahead and take care of everything," said Boone County Health Department spokesperson Heather Baer.
The health department says it needs volunteers without medical experience as well. They can do paperwork and act as receptionists. The health department schedules monthly meetings and sporatic training exercises to train new volunteers, but the time commitments can be flexible for different schedules.
