Dog Bite Leads to Legal Tangle Over Yellow Lab
SALEM (AP) - The owners of a yellow Labrador retriever facing euthanasia ordered by an eastern Missouri town's mayor for allegedly chomping on a 7-year-old girl say experts about dog bites conclude the pooch didn't do it.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Phineas' fate has developed into a legal struggle that has delayed the dog's sentence, which was imposed by Salem's mayor in July of last year after the girl was bitten.
Mayor Gary Brown concluded the dog needed to be put down, based on a police report and photos of the wound.
But two dog-bite experts say in court filings that Phineas wasn't the culprit. They say the wound is too small, and that the dental pattern isn't consistent with Phineas' teeth.
Salem is 125 miles south of St. Louis.
