E-Bay Jail for Sale
The 4,000-square-foot fixer-upper is not the sort you'll see on the cover of "Home and Garden" magazine.
But, it's drawing international attention, including a man from India who says he'll pay $33,000 for the former lockup. But, a Romanian missionary wants to give him a run for his money.
"When they return from their missionary trips, that they can have a place to come home to," said Jim Myles, Randolph County commissioner. "But also, when they leave again, they said, 'Can you imagine a better place you can leave all your stuff than a jail, where all the windows are barred up?'"
The 95-year-old jail has been empty since last June, and the county commission will start accepting bids in the next couple of weeks. So far, about 100 people requested more information about the jail, and the commission expects 10 to bid on it.
Some residents have their own ideas of what they'd like to see there.
"Perhaps a nursing home or for children that need a home," said Frank Lyon. "There's plenty of room there."
But, everyone agrees whoever or whatever moves into the former jail should benefit the community.
