Ellis Library Fire Damage Still Causing Problems
COLUMBIA - The damage from the Ellis Library fire continued to inconvenience staff and visitors Thursday, even though more than a month has passed. The State Historical Society had to cancel its annual "Trick or Treat through Missouri History" event, because it does not have the room to host its usual 200-person crowd given the serious damage to its facility.
State Historical Society employees told KOMU 8 they are disappointed they cannot host the event, as they usually bring their kids and have a good time dressing up like historical figures and giving tours. One 9-year-old girl learned about the cancellation Thursday, and she said she is "sad", because she would have liked to attend the event again this year.
MU Campus Facilities spoke with KOMU 8 over the phone, saying the fire will cost the university between $600,000 and $1 million. A rep said, "We are incurring costs as we go." She expects repairs to continue for the next eight weeks.
MU Libraries Administrator Shannon Cary said she is pleased with the pace of Campus Facilities' repair efforts. She expects the delay is coming from the orders placed, like new carpeting. For now, workers are busy repainting the walls.
State Historical Society staff said they look forward to hosting the Halloween event for kids next year.
