Down on the street, Quinton's Bar and Deli seems like business as usual, but on the roof there's a lot going on.
Quinton's is installing two patios on top of its building. The expansion allows for about 5,000 square feet of outdoor seating, doubling the bar's current height.
The patios will allow the bar to side-step Columbia's smoking ordinance, something many other establishments already do.
But some people we spoke with Friday worry the expansion could be an eyesore downtown.
This move has some businesses and their patrons calling for a new unified approach to downtown development, which would take time.
"It's been about a two year process. And that's because it's slow. They pull in all the property owners, all the residents, all the businesses, and they have a long discussion," said Carrie Gartner with the Columbia Special Business district. "And together all those people create a template for what they want development to look like."
KOMU tried to contact Quinton's owners Friday, but they did not return our calls.
Employees at the restaurant were unable to comment as well.
