Fair Sees Higher Security, Lower Attendance
BOONE COUNTY - Officials at the Boone County Fair said Friday they have refocused security after last year's shooting. The sheriff's department has reported only one arrest at the fairgrounds so far this year. Boone County Fair general manager George Harris said that it is doing everything possible to make sure everyone at the fair is safe. Last year's shooting took place after an altercation, leaving one man injured. The Boone County Sheriff's department said it has placed more attention on the entry gates this year. The sheriff's department said the focus on security has caused this year's fair to be generally quiet.
Boone County Fair officials said crime is not turning people away from coming out, but the heat is. They said the fair has seen a drop in attendance of about 10 percent this year. The fair continues until Saturday and will end with a fireworks show.
