Family, friends speak about man shot and killed in Columbia fight
COLUMBIA - Family and friends of Cameron Scott Caruthers spoke to KOMU 8 News over the telephone Tuesday afternoon.
Caruthers died Monday after being shot at a home in the 1300 block of Dawn Ridge Road in northeast Columbia. Police said he was shot in the stomach by someone he knew after a "disturbance" around noon Monday.
On Tuesday, Caruthers' mother and a friend from his time in the Army said he had been living in the home where the incident happened but had been moving his things out when a fight happened.
Caruthers was a graduate of Hickman High school. He was also in the Army and deployed to Iraq. A friend from his platoon provided photos of Caruthers from his time in the military.
His mother told KOMU 8 News he had recently graduated from welding school. She said while he had times of trouble in his life, he "had a heart of gold. He'd do anything for anyone." She said he described his time in the Army as the best times of his life.
The Columbia Police Department said officers questioned the other man who was in the home when they arrived on the scene, and he was released.
