FBI Aid Sought in St. Louis County Crime Lab Probe
CLAYTON - The St. Louis County police chief is seeking FBI assistance in a burgeoning probe of a Clayton crime lab construction contract.
Chief Tim Fitch says he sought the outside aid after unspecified new information emerged following a St. Louis Post-Dispatch report of a potential conflict of interest in the county bidding process.
County leaders had previously investigated the propriety of a $3.7 million subcontract to a company owned by police board chairman Gregory Sansone.
SM Mechanical LCC is receiving about 40 percent of the total project cost to do heating and air-conditioning work for the crime lab.
County Executive Charlie Dooley found that the arrangement did not violate the county charter since Sansone's company was not hired directly by the county but instead by its general contractor.
