Ferguson protesters distance themselves from suspect
FERGUSON (AP) - Protesters say they didn't know a man charged with shooting and wounding two officers last week outside the Ferguson Police Department.
Twenty-six-year-old Brittany Ferrell had just left a meeting with more than a dozen other protest leaders Sunday when word of the arrest of 20-year-old Jeffrey Williams circulated. The protest leader with the group Millennial Activists United said no one in the group knew Williams. A St. Louis NAACP leader also hadn't heard of Williams.
Ferrell says she suspects that St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch tried to cast him as a protester to reflect negatively on the movement. McCulloch led a grand jury that declined to indict a white police officer in the shooting of an unarmed black man.
McCulloch says Williams reported he wasn't shooting at the officers.
