Ferguson voter registrations lower than reported
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - St. Louis County election officials are acknowledging that an error led them to significantly overstate the number of newly registered voters following a fatal police shooting.
County elections director Rita Heard Days said Tuesday that an additional 128 people registered to vote in Ferguson from Aug. 11 through Monday. St. Louis County had originally said that 3,287 people registered to vote in Ferguson since the Aug. 9 shooting death of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer.
The death of Michael Brown sparked weeks of civil unrest, and some activists led voter registration drives in an attempt to reshape the local government.
Election officials said the voter-registration error occurred when they ran the wrong report to extract figures from a statewide database.
