Festival Allows Greek Community to Celebrate Heritage
COLUMBIA - St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church held a festival today to show their community pride.
Adult and children dancers in the Greek community danced to greek music and showed off their dance moves.
The church gave tours, sold books and sold boxes of Greek pastries.
Greek food like souvlakis, ouzos and gyros were available.
Maria Kalaitzandonakes, one participant in the festival, says this event was more than just art and food. Her presence today has a deeper meaning.
"Your heritage kind of defines you in alot of ways, like I mean a lot of people. We consider America the great melting pot, but sometimes we don't always talk about the differences that make us special. We only talk about, you know, the things that make us the same," Kalaitzandonakes said.
The festival continues tomorrow from noon until 8 p.m.
