Financial woes plague Poplar Bluff venue
POPLAR BLUFF (AP) - The financial picture for the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff faced increasing scrutiny from city officials this week.
The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports a special council meeting was scheduled for Wednesday to meet with the coliseum's advisory board amid the growing realization that turning a profit for the coliseum is a daunting task.
Members of the advisory board said booking a big name can be a risk with no guarantee that turnout will be enough to offset the cost.
Consider 2013, when events included professional wrestling, professional bull riding and concerts by Nelly, Audio Adrenaline and Springfest. Ticket sales generated less than $230,000, creating substantial losses.
