Fire Leaves Duplex Severely Damaged
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District extinguished a fire at a Scott Bvld. duplex Saturday evening. It took fire crews 45 minutes to bring the fire under control, in addition to calling in extra units for assitance. The fire department says the duplex suffered about $30,000 of fire, smoke and water damage.
Mulija Caldarevic, the owner of the duplex, was home on her couch sleeping at the time. Construction crews at a nearby site knocked on her door until she woke up after seeing smoke and flames from the outside. Caldarevic told police she is a "heavy sleeper" and didn't hear the smoke alarms.
Caldarevic's neighbors, Tierney Barnes and Shawn-Patrick Campbell, were also home at the time when construction crews alerted them.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
