BOONE COUNTY - The Boone County Fire Protection District said Tuesday it plans to have at least six firefighters at the Boone County Fair each night until it ends Saturday. "We've been in this type of hot weather condition for now about 30 days. People have heard to re-hydrate and we're still encouraging people to do that," Public Information Officer Gale Blomenkamp said.
Blomenkamp also said two firefighers will be patroling the fair grounds in a Gator Utility Vehicle. "We have a cooler of water. We have first aid equipment, an AED [automated external defibrillator]... as well as fire extinguishers to try to jump on anything quickly," Blomenkamp said. Boone County fire also has one fire truck with emergency medical equpment stationed at the grandstand. The fair will hold special events in that arena, including a "truck and tractor pull" Tuesday and a demolition derby Wednesday.
"With the demolition derby, we have eight firefighters assigned to that event. It typically brings in a larger crowd and there is more potential for an issue on the arena floor," Blomenkamp said.
Boone County Fair Secretary Tracy Mulligan said 1500 people attended the fair's opening day. Mulligan also said that was a huge turnaround from last year's opening that saw 500 people.
