COLUMBIA - MU's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction held the inaugural Companion Animal Memorial Event on Saturday. The event, held at the Grand Cru Resturant was for owners celebrate the lives of deceased pets and help them with the grieving process.
Several speakers shared their stories, and participants were able to visit with fellow pet owners to share stories and pictures of their deceased pets.
MU Veterinary Professor Rebecca Johnson said the event was to help pet owners cope with animal death and connect with others in similar situations."It is important that we take the grieving process seriously for deceased animals. Many people experience this loss with an expression of grief similar to that as when a human family member dies," Johnson said.
The MU veterinary school will also start offering counseling and memorial services to anyone who has lost a pet.
