Fishermen Pull Suicidal Woman To Safety
CAPE GIRARDEAU (AP) - Three southeast Missouri fishermen pulled a suicidal woman into their boat after she jumped off of a bridge and into the water.
The Southeast Missourian reports that the woman jumped from an Interstate 55 bridge Friday afternoon and into water known as the Diversion Channel near Cape Girardeau.
Bob Fischer, his son Richard and Bob's grandson Nathan Vomund had been fishing for carp and were under the bridge when they heard someone talking on the bridge. They looked up to see the woman, in her late 20s, legs dangling off the side. They saw her jump.
The men, who are all from Marquand, paddled their boat to her. She fought the men, screaming, "I want to die!" She finally allowed the men to bring her onto the boat.
The woman was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
