Flames Engulf Planned Apartment Complex
COLUMBIA - A fire ravaged a planned student apartment complex in Columbia early Sunday morning.
Crews received a call about a "fully involved" fire on the second and third floors of the still-under-construction Brookside on College Apartments on the corner of College Avenue and Walnut Street at 5:09 a.m., according to the Columbia Fire Department.
When they arrived on scene two minutes later, firefighters reported that the building was "fully involved" and began a "defensive attack" to preserve as much of the north side of the building as possible, Captain John Metz said.
All available Columbia Fire Department units were dispatched to the scene, and Boone County Fire personnel were called to staff posts at the station.
The Columbia Fire Department said they will begin investigating the cause of the fire once the fire is completely out, which could be as late as Sunday evening. They are unsure at this time whether the building will be a total loss.
Brookside on College has been under construction and was expected to open in time for students to move in August 2012.
