Fleming Named USA Softball Player of the Week
COLUMBIA -- Missouri senior outfielder Ashley Fleming has been selected as the USA Softball National Player of the Week, as announced by American Softball Association (ASA) on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second career award for Fleming, who was recognized as a sophomore on May 4, 2010, and the fourth time a Tiger has received this honor. Fleming was also picked as the Big 12 Player of the Week earlier today.
"With so many great players in the country, it's a huge honor to be given this award," said Fleming. "I am glad I was able to contribute to the team's victories against Texas, and I'm excited to see what the rest of the season brings for this team."
For the week of April 2-8, Fleming led the Tigers to a big weekend over then-No. 3 Texas, guiding Mizzou to two victories in the crucial three-game series. She hit safely in each contest, batting .600 (6-for-10) for the weekend. She also drove in eight of the team's 16 RBI over the course of the series.
"I'm so happy for Ashley," stated head coach Ehren Earleywine. "This is a great honor for both her and our program. She's worked hard to be the player that she has become and I know she appreciates the award a great deal."
On Thursday, in Mizzou's only loss of the weekend, Fleming singled three times and drove in three of the team's five runs. She stayed hot on Friday, going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI, and closed the weekend with her eighth homer of the year on Saturday, helping the Tigers win the rubber game by a 2-0 score. She posted a .667 on base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage in the three games, and is hitting .392 with eight homers and 32 RBI on the season, all tops on the team. She is now fourth all-time at Missouri with 35 career home runs.
