ST. LOUIS (AP) - Is St. Louis ready if another flu pandemic breaks out? That's the subject of a community forum scheduled for today at Washington University. Some experts believe a global bird flu pandemic may be on the horizon. The forum will look at how a devastating flu outbreak was handled in St. Louis 89 years ago. In 1918, an outbreak of Spanish flu killed millions around the world. Some American cities were hit hard but St. Louis officials were credited with saving thousands of lives by taking steps to stop the spread of the disease. Washington University officials say those steps included closure of bars, markets and other public gathering places, and the use of military to enforce in-home quarantines.
