Ford Unveils '08 Escape, Mariner at Claycomo
CLAYCOMO (AP) - One day after reporting the worst annual loss in its history, Ford unveils new versions of the small sport utility vehicles that are crucial to its turnaround plan. The 2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner are both manufactured at Ford's Claycomo plant in suburban Kansas City. The updates feature more extras and come in with smaller pricetags than their predecessors. Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally says that's because the manufacturing process is more efficient. Both small SUVs also come in hybrid versions made in Claycomo. Yesterday Ford announced a $12.7 billion loss for 2006 but expects to be profitable again by 2009. Ford is moving away from its larger passenger vehicles for smaller, more fuel- efficient cars.
