Former deputy pleads guilty to stealing thousands of dollars
GREENVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A former eastern Missouri deputy could face up to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from a woman.
The Daily Journal newspaper in Park Hills reports that Eric Smith entered the guilty plea Wednesday.
Smith was working as a deputy sheriff in Madison County when he was arrested. Sheriff Bobby Spain had requested an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol after the victim alleged that Smith stole about $40,000 in cash from her home. Spain says the crime happened while Smith was off-duty.
Smith told authorities he knew the money was in a safe and took it while the woman was outside in her yard.
Sentencing will be Nov. 17.
