COLUMBIA - Crews worked through the rain on Forum Boulevard left turn lanes Wednesday. The construction is expected to slow traffic in the area as cones mark the temporary lanes.
The Columbia Public Works Department said construction work started last week on new left turn lanes into Victoria Place and the MKT Trail parking lot. The new middle turn lane will start at Katy Lane and run south to the bridge over Hinkson Creek.
Scott Bitterman, manager of maintenance and traffic said, "Before it was just one lane in each direction, so there is still one lane in each direction even through the construction zone. The lanes do shift a little bit, so drivers will need to be aware of that but delay-wise it shouldn't be a whole lot more than normal."
Bitterman warned motorists, "Always be aware of the other traffic that is on the roadway because if someone stops to make a left turn into a driveway that can cause traffic back up and always be careful of the workers because there are times when the traffic may have to stop for short periods while they fix the roadway."
The city expects construction to be completed by the end of October. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution in the area. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph and motorists are asked to take an alternative route when possible.
