Fulton, Callaway County Propose Sales Tax
The commission wants to re-surface county roads and beef up law enforcement.
"We're down to where we haven't bought any new equipment for two years, haven't overlaid the asphalt we have that's breaking up," explained Eastern District Commissioner Gabe Craighead. "So, if it doesn't pass, we'll have to look at other options."
However, Fulton officials want more covered drains and sidewalks.
"I don't know what all the county needs in their's," said Mayor Robert Craghead, "but we will present a plan that is totally comprehensive to the city of Fulton."
City and county officials said higher costs are forcing them to ask taxpayers for more money, but resident Charles Lander disagreed.
"I probably will vote against it just because I feel as if I'm overtaxed now," he said.
If voters pass the sales tax, it will mean $700,00 for Fulton. The city's proposed one-half cent tax will appear on the February 2007 ballot, while the county's one-half cent tax will appear on the April 2007 ballot.
