FULTON - The Kingdom of Callaway Chamber of Commerce and the Fulton Area Development Corporation Board of Directors voted Wednesday to support funding for construction of new facilities at the Fulton State Hospital.
The Biggs Forensic Center at Fulton State Hospital is the oldest state psychiatric hospital west of the Mississippi River. It is also the state's only maximum security psychiatric facility.
"Ensuring that these Missourians continue to have a good job that helps keep all of us safe is critically important. Not to mention the additional 2,500 new jobs that would result from a construction project of this scale would be a boost to local communities and area businesses," said Fulton Area Development Corporation Director, Bruce Hackmann.
Earlier this month, Gov. Jay Nixon announced his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2015 will recommend a strategic bond issuance that will make resources available for the construction of a new psychiatric facility in Fulton. Gov. Nixon's proposal would replace the deteriorating facility with a new intermediate security complex that will be safer and more conducive to modern treatment.
