Garbage truck catches fire on Route B
COLUMBIA - A garbage truck caught fire on Route B just off of Highway 63 North a little after 2 p.m. Monday. The Columbia Fire Department extinguished the fire with the help of a Boone County Fire Department water tanker. No one was injured during the fire or during the fight to put the blaze out.
The truck had to remain on the road to cool down before the fire department could turn it over to the department of waste. The truck ran on natural gas fuels so the crews wanted to take extra precautions before moving the vehicle.
The Route B exit off of Highway 63 North became a detour as police directed traffic away from the scene.
Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephen Potter said that the damage of the vehicle could be up to $290,000 but the exact number was not known at the time.
An investigation will follow to determine the cause of the fire.
