Gold Team Tops Black Team in Annual Volleyball Scrimmage
COLUMBIA -- The Mizzou volleyball program opened its 2012 season with the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Hearnes Center and the Gold Team, comprised of the Tiger starters, defeated the Black Team, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 15-12), on Friday night. Transfer Taylor Simpson led the way for the Gold Team with 12 kills on a team-best .476 hitting while junior All-American Lisa Henning pitched in 10 more kills on .292 hitting.
"I thought we did a lot of things really well tonight," head coach Wayne Kreklow said following the match. "With a lot of returning players this season, it was nice to get out there and see them play in a competitive setting. We obviously still have a lot of areas where we can improve and we need to work on that this week, but this was a great starting point for our team."
All-SEC Preseason selection Molly Kreklow quarterbacked the Gold Team with 30 assists and guided the unit to a .350 team hitting percentage. Sophomore Whitney Little also had a fine match, hitting .400 with eight kills on just 15 attacks while finishing with a team-high four blocks. Defensively, sophomore Niki Collier put together a fine contest with a match-high nine digs and just one reception error in 32 service chances. Sarah Meister had six digs while Jade Hayes and both Simpson and Henning each pulled in five digs. Meister split time between the Gold and Black teams and finished with 10 total digs in the match.
The Gold Team ran away with the first set, 25-14, in large part to a great offensive showing. The Gold Team hit .419 as a unit in the first set with 15 kills in the runaway effort. The Black Team - comprised of newcomers and members of the scout team - kept things close in the second, but the Gold Team pulled away with a 25-23 set win. In the third and final set, the Black Team ran out to a 10-7 lead, but the Gold Team closed the set on an 8-2 run to win the match.
