Gov. Nixon signs bill to establish preschool rating system
SPRINGFIELD - Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill into law Wednesday that would establish a quality rating system for Missouri preschools.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary School Education will collaborate with Missouri Head Start and the Missouri Departments of Mental Health, Social Services, and Health and Senior Services to develop the new quality rating system.
The new rating system may include information about an early learning provider's safety standards, instructional quality and parental engagement among other categories. Participation in the rating system is voluntary.
The bill also included provisions that would establish the Legislative Task Force on Dyslexia, create guidelines for screening students for dyslexia and provide support for such students. American civics will be added to the testing requirements for Missouri high school students to graduate as well.
Earlier today, Nixon signed another bill into law that would fight sex trafficking and protect victims of those crimes.
