Grease Thefts on the Rise
ROCK HILL - Thieves in the St. Louis area have found a new target: grease.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that thieves are increasingly siphoning grease from containers behind restaurants. The newspaper says grease thefts have been rising since the introduction of biofuels to the market once dominated by animal feed and soap industries.
Bobby Tessler, owner of St. Louis Wing Co., says thefts of grease at his Rock Hill restaurant have deprived him of about $2,000 that a grease rendering company would have paid him.
Authorities say stopping the thefts is hard because penalties are minimal.
