Group Petitions to Expel Columbia's Police Chief
COLUMBIA- A group under the name of "Chief Burton Needs to Resign" is gathering signatures for a petition against Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton. The organizer of the group is Doug Lane and he said the group supports former police officer Rob Sanders who was fired for using excessive force against an inmate in a cell back in August 2011. But Lane said while the group dug into information to defend Sanders, it found other information about Chief Burton.
The group posted documents on the Canine Fano Facebook page, which it believes show Chief Burton is not qualified to be a leader in Columbia. To view those documents click here. Lane said the documents are from Chief Burton's former job at the Dallas Police Department where Burton resigned in 1981. Lane said Burton quit two days before getting the results of an internal investigation on the use of excessive force.
Lane also said he believes if the city had been presented with these documents in the first place, Burton would not be Columbia's police chief.
KOMU 8 tried to contact Chief Burton on Sunday but could not reach him.
A representative of Keep Columbia Free wrote in an email that the group supports Burton:
"There is no clear proof Chief Burton's hiring was conducted improperly or that he was dishonest about his past."
