Helpers Give Missouri Animal Shelter Workers Christmas Off
CAPE GIRARDEAU (AP) - Kittens still need food and dogs still exercise on Christmas Day.
But thanks to a group of volunteers, workers at a Cape Girardeau animal shelter can still spend the holiday with their families; many of the workers have young children.
The Southeast Missourian (http://bit.ly/U9vHSj ) reports that about a dozen volunteers showed up this year at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. The volunteers are called Holiday Helpers, and they cared for more than 50 animals.
It's not uncommon for the holiday volunteers to end up leaving with a new pet. That's what happened last year to Karl Honaas of Cape Girardeau. The Chihuahua-and-Dachshund mix he took for a walk on Christmas Day wound up coming home with him the next day.
Today, he considers the pooch his best friend.
