Helping the Hungry and Lonely

The Hungry and Lonely Dinner is for everyone in Moberly, and this year it's expected to feed at least 1,500 people on Christmas Eve. Volunteers come back year after year.

"I was one of the original committee members that started this 22 years ago, in a little church, in the basement," explained Ralph Hunter. "And the first year, we had 72 people."

Dinner starts at 5:00 p.m., followed by entertainment including a visit from Santa Claus at 6:00 p.m. Coordinators say donations of food and money have increased this year, but more are needed, such as pies, presents and attendance prizes for bingo.

The Hungry and Lonely dinner used to be in the Moberly Municipal Auditorium. However, because of size and space needs, the dinner's moving this year to the Moberly Area Community College Activity Center.

Volunteers say one of their favorite parts of the event is children.

"I think it's seeing the kids that might not get something else for Christmas," explained Stachia Vorhees. "Whenever they actually get a gift that they get to choose, a lot of them will choose presents for their family, instead of themselves."

You can donate for the dinner, starting at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the MACC Activity Center.
