High Shooting Death Rate for St. Louis Youths
ST. LOUIS (AP) - New federal data shows that St. Louis ranks second only to New Orleans when it comes to youths killed by gunshots.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the city's murder rate for people ages 10 to 19 was more than three times the average for major cities. The data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was released Thursday.
St. Louis had 46 youths killed by gunshots in 2006 and 2007, a rate of 50 deaths per 100,000 population. New Orleans had a rate of 106 deaths per 100,000. The average for major cities was 15 per 100,000.
