BOONE COUNTY - Investigators suspect a driver was going too fast before crashing into a tree on Highway VV in Boone County Thursday morning.

Crews were dispatched at 11:30 a.m. after reports of a car hitting a tree along on the highway. Officials say two men in their mid-to-late twenties were thrown from the car after cartwheeling into the trees.

KOMU 8 spoke to Boone County Fire Battalion Chuck Leake who said beer cans were found on the ground outside the vehicle, but could not confirm the accident was alcohol-related. High speeds and unfamiliarity with the winding road are suspected to be the cause of the accident.

Both victims were taken to University Hospital in serious condition.
