Highway Construction Around Lake
"It's a zoo. It's packed with lots of people," he said. "I have a perfect view of it everyday, and I see it out there, and I drive in it. There's a lot of traffic, it's a lot of truck traffic, and I've seen my fair share of accidents out there."
Grossman isn't the only one who's bugged by heavy traffic.
"For years, the folks down there were trying to get improvements to both Route 54 and Route 5," recalled Roger Schwartze, MoDOT district engineer. "It was something that the area was needing for a long time."
It was the early 1970s when the Missouri Department of Transportation began working on a solution. But, by 2010 when construction is complete, you can drive through town or drive around it at highway speeds.
Grossman isn't convinced the bypass will help his business.
"Rerouting the traffic away from Business 54 and all the business surely isn't gonna help the businesses," he said.
MoDOT disagrees because, it said, the expressway will include several interchanges.
The 54 Expressway will cost about $180 million.
