Holts Summit officers experience close call on traffic stop
CALLAWAY COUNTY - Two Holts Summit police officers are lucky to be alive after a car nearly hit them Friday while they conducted a traffic stop.
Holts Summit Police Department Sgt. Marc Haycook said he and Officer Stephen Smith had a car pulled over on Highway 54 south of the city limits near the Melray Curve.
Haycook said drivers heading toward the scene had been moving over into the other lane as required by law when one driver stopped in the left lane.
Haycook said another driver, coming over the hill, did not initially see the stopped car. The driver swerved to avoid the vehicle, narrowly missing the officers on the shoulder.
Haycook said the car came within a foot of him and Smith as it ran off the road into a ditch. He called the near miss "an eye-opening experience."
Haycook said no one was hurt in the crash and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating.
