Holts Summit remembers three teens killed in weekend crash

HOLTS SUMMIT - A small mid-Missouri community remembers the three teenage girls who died in a severe car accident Saturday

The victims were 17-year old Miriah McDaniel, 17-year-old Elizabeth Moses, and 13-year-old Meggan Fowler.  A fourth victim, 27-year-old Kathryn Zavoral of Jefferson City, also died in the wreck.

"Once you got to know them, you got to know them well," said Ashley Craig, a Holts Summit resident and member of the same church as two of the teenagers. "There was never a dull moment, never a sad moment," Craig said. 

Lieutenant Paul Reinsch of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said authorities received a call of a "careless and imprudent driver" in Holts Summit Saturday evening. A Holts Summit police officer saw the vehicle, and Reinsch said he attempted to stop the car. 

Reinsch said when the officer turned on his lights, the vehicle turned onto the exit ramp from Highway AA-OO onto eastbound Highway 54 and traveled westbound, against traffic. 

Reinsch said the officer attempted to parallel the car in the westbound lane when the vehicle struck another head-on. 

The impact killed Zavoral, the driver of the first car.

Holts Summit resident Miriah McDaniel, drove the second vehicle, along with Fowler and Moses, also from Holts Summit.

The Boone County Medical Examiner pronounced the four involved dead at the scene.

The crash report states none of the four victims were wearing seat belts. 

"It's not true...the first...I don't know...I couldn't believe it, still don't want to," Craig said in reference to hearing the news for the first time.

She said the three teens were returning home from a mission trip in Arkansas. 

Ashley Craig and her husband, Justin Craig, are both members of Life House Church in Holts Summit, and knew the three teenage victims. 

"It's just hard, because they were so young, and so full of life, and so pure, and like, they hadn't been touched by this world yet, " Ashley Craig said. 

Life House Church is affiliated with Generations Child Care in Holts Summit, where McDaniel and Fowler both worked. 

"They helped raise our kids, they were there every day," Justin Craig said. "Even our kids loved them, they were their best friends. They'd come home and talk about Meggan and Miriah."

He said Moses was also involved with the church through her friends. 

"When we took church trips, Elizabeth was always there, she'd always come with Miriah," he said. 

Ashley Craig said McDaniel and Moses attended Jefferson City High School, and Fowler attended New Bloomfield Middle School. She said New Bloomfield Middle School will host a candle light memorial for Fowler and the other victims Wednesday night at 8 p.m. She said they will be selling T-shirts and accepting donations to raise money for funeral costs.
