House Approves Support Limits
The amendment was approved 82-to-74 and added to a larger bill that bars investigators from closing a child abuse investigation if the victim dies. The amendment would allow parents of college students to stop supporting their children after they turn 21, or if the child fails at least two classes in a college semester. Once a child turns 21, a parent also would be allowed to stop helping to cover the costs for health problems diagnosed after the child has turned 18. Current law allows a judge to order parents to continue paying until children turn 22 if they are enrolled in college.
