Jay Nixon Visits Northwest Flood Areas
COLUMBIA - Gov. Jay Nixon made a trip to Northwest Missouri Saturday to address the flooding concerns of the area.
Traveling with Maj. Gen. Stephen L. Danner, Nixon boarded a plane from Rosecrans Airport in St. Joseph to get an aerial view of the Missouri river and the levees designed to control it.
According to Missouri National Guard media release, Nixon advises residents in warning areas to be cautious also stating that the "flood fight" has already begun. The governor plans on utilizing the Missouri National Guard for levee monitoring, sandbagging, emergency route clearance and supporting first responders and law enforcement.
The recent flood threats make the fifth state of emergency mobilization for the Missouri National Guard for 2011. In addition to the flooding, 160 citizen-soldiers are supporting tornado relief efforts in Joplin.
