JEFFERSON CITY - The Jefferson City Disc Golf Club held its 9th Annual Ice Bowl Saturday. The event benefits the Samaritan Center of Jefferson City.

Tournament Director Stan Balke said Ice Bowls are held worldwide during the months of January and February in countries like the Netherlands, Sweden and Canada.

Ice Bowls are not an ordinary disc golf event. Balke said there is a rule that Ice Bowls cannot be canceled or postponed because of weather conditions; however, he says it's understandable if some people miss because they can't make it there safely.

Balke said they will play no matter what the weather is.

"In 2011, we had a blizzard and we were out here throwing in 3 feet of snow," Balke said.

He said this year they got really lucky with weather in the low 50s.

Balke says through donations, they have raised more than $25 thousand for the Samaritan Center over the past 9 years.

"The Samartian Center has given a lot to the community and I feel it's a small thing I can give back to," Balke said.

He said he played in Columbia's Ice Bowl and thought it was a fantastic idea and decided to try it in Jefferson City.

Balke isn't the only one with a love for the game and a good cause.

Player Dennis T. Clark Jr. said, "It was awesome, it's a great event and it's always great to come out and support something local."

Balke said last year they raised more than $3,500 ranking Jefferson City 17th out of more than 220 Ice Bowls.

His wife said it's something he looks forward to every year.
