Jefferson City Ponders Funding for New Fire Station
JEFFERSON CITY- Jefferson City Council discussed increasing costs for a safer design to the new Fire Station No. 3. Construction is already planned but the design does not currently include sections of the building that would protect employees from weather emergencies. The new building is already estimated at $2.6 million. To build the extra protection, the cost would increase by $51,000. The secure sections of the building would include a 911 call center and other small rooms that will provide protection to police department employees.
Public Education Officer Jason Turner said, "When you look at the tornadoes down in Joplin, last year, with the destruction of two fire stations, the first priority is the protection of our fire fighters, making sure they're safe in any adverse weather conditions."
The council plans to look at this issue again in two weeks.
