Joplin Cyclists Plan Recovery Ride to New Orleans
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - A Joplin-based group of bicyclists plans an 800-mile ride to New Orleans this summer to aid recovery efforts from the deadly May 2011 tornado.
Organizers expect about 40 riders from across the country to take part in the 10-day ride, which begins June 20.
They hope to raise $150,000, money that will also help recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana as well as Superstorm Sandy in New York and New Jersey.
The fundraising event builds on a partnership between Rebuild Joplin and the New Orleans-based St. Bernard Project. The nonprofit groups say they've built new homes for nearly 500 Katrina survivors and 73 Joplin families.
