Joplin to Seek FEMA Extension for Families

JOPLIN (AP) - Joplin officials will ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency to extend temporary housing provided to tornado survivors for seven months.
The City Council voted Monday night to approve the request to the State Emergency Management Agency, which will forward it to FEMA.
The Joplin Globe reports Gov. Jay Nixon said Monday he would support the extension.
The current housing contract with FEMA ends Nov. 9. City Planner Troy Bolander says the proposed seven-month extension was based on projections that enough affordable housing would be built by then to accommodate those still in FEMA housing.
Bolander told the council that 586 families had used FEMA housing after their homes were destroyed by the 2011 tornado, and 166 remain in the housing.
