JEFFERSON CITY - A Cole County judge is considering whether to block a new law that prevents legislators and their challengers from raising money during the legislative session. Richard Callahan heard arguments Friday on a motion to temporarily block the law. Supporters said barring fundraising during the session helps avoid the appearance that lawmakers can be bought. Opponents said the restriction would hurt challengers the most. The lawsuit argues that the ban limits candidates' free speech. Opponents hope to eventually have the entire measure, including the removal of campaign contribution limits, struck down. The judge plans to rule on the temporary motion early next week.
