Julian Taylor Leads WWU at Nationals
FULTON, MO - Sophomore William Woods men's golfer Julian Taylor couldn't have made a stronger statement after day one at Nationals, as he stands in a tie for eighth place overall shooting a 71 (-1).
Julian thus far has the best score for golfers who are playing as individuals, as the next highest score playing as an individual is Steven Brookes (Asbury University) who scored a 73 (+1) for a 24th place finish.
Taylor, who started the morning teeing off at hole 10, bogeyed his first hole of the day, but was able to redeem himself two holes later on the par five 12th, with a birdie getting back to even par. He then was able to par the next four holes, before scoring a five on a par four, closing out the back nine with a 37 (+1).
On hole one of the front nine, the York, England, native had a much better start, scoring an eagle on a par five, getting back to -1 under-par. Taylor would then par his next two holes, before moving to -2 after knocking in a birdie on hole four. He closed out the day with a bogey on the par four ninth, but still shot a very respectable 71 (-1).
Head Coach Barry Doty was impressed with his outing on such a tough course, "He hit the ball very good today and posted a solid first round score," said Doty. "We had difficulty reading the greens and he only made one putt outside of five feet. He (Julian) had several three puts and missed numerous birdie opportunities inside 10 feet, however, he is putting still very well and I am confident that they will start dropping for him," said Doty.
Anthony Marchesani from Oklahoma City is the overall leader thus far, scoring a 68 (-4). Including Julian, there are nine other players under-par, but there are still plenty of golfers on the course that could make a run at the top of the leaderboard.
Round two begins Wednesday for Julian at 12:30 when he tees off on hole one with Vance Edwards (Houston-Victoria).
