KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Chiefs have traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, according to the Kansas City Star.

Smith spent the last five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, recording a 50-26 record in his time as a starter. He completed 67.5 percent of his passes for more than 4,000 yards and a career-high 26 touchdowns last season. He competed in his third Pro Bowl on Sunday.

Smith had one year remaining on his deal with the Chiefs. He reached an agreement with Washington for a four-year contract extension, totaling $94 million with $71 million of that being guaranteed money. This contract is the third-highest ever for a quarterback.

Kansas City will receive a 2018 third-round pick and a player that will be named Wednesday, in exchange for Smith. The Chiefs are also expected to receive a second-round pick from Redskins.

This trade will provide an opportunity for Patrick Mahomes II, 2017 first round draft pick, to take the starting job under center next season. Mahomes II saw the field once last year, making his regular-season debut when the team traveled to Denver to face the Broncos.

The trade which has been agreed upon, but cannot be made official until the NFL’s new league year begins March 14.
