Kansas City Facility Gets a Neonatal Boost
KANSAS CITY - Children's Mercy Hospital is helping a Kansas City hospital provide better care to its youngest patients.
Truman Medical Centers' Lakewood Family Birthplace is adding a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It will be capable of caring for babies born around 32 weeks' gestation or full-term babies that need extra monitoring.
Since the Lakewood Family Birthplace opened in 2011, Children's Mercy neonatologists have been available to consult with patients and their doctors. TMC Lakewood Chief Operating Officer Charlie Shields says that with the change, Children's Mercy neonatal staff will be onsite around the clock.
Children's Mercy also operates a Level III NICU capable of caring for the smallest and sickest newborns at Truman Medical Centers' Hospital Hill campus near downtown.
