KANSAS CITY (AP) - R. Stephen Green, interim superintendent of Kansas City Public Schools, has been named superintendent. The school district's board of directors announced Green's appointment Monday.
Green had been interim superintendent of the district since September 2011. Green, the 27th superintendent in Kansas City since 1969, replaced John Covington, whose tenure as superintendent included the closing of nearly half the district's schools.
Enrollment in the district has dropped to about 17,000 from a peak of 75,000 in the late 1960s. The district also lost its accreditation in 2000 but made improvements to avoid a state takeover. It has held provisional accreditation since 2002.
Before being named interim superintendent, Green was president and CEO of Kauffman Scholars Inc., which provides tutoring and life skills to Kansas City-area youths from middle school through college.
