Kids Get a Chance to "Break" Folktales
COLUMBIA - Kids gathered at the Columbia Public Library Thursday morning to participate in some folktale fun. Librarians read classic stories to the children such as "The Princess and the Pea" and then read "fractured" versions that combined aspects of multiple folktales in one story.
Kids, ages six to 12, sat around to listen to the stories and then got the opportunity to collaborate and create their own version of a folktale. The librarians omitted words from folktales and then asked the kids to give them nouns and adjectives to fill in the blanks. The end result was an original folktale created by the children.
Kids were also encouraged to write their own folktale by themselves or draw a picture to describe the story if they preferred. The same event was hosted earlier this week and the librarians believe it will be hosted again in the future.
